Here is the heart of all these modifications, a new leadscrew and nut. The leadscrew is 1/2-20 threaded rod and the thrust bearing end was machined completely on the Taig lathe. For some reason, at the time of making this particular part I made step-by-step
You will need 2 14 10-32 UNF T-bolts to fix the spindle to the Taig lathe cross-slide or 2 ½ bolts to fix it to the Taig mill table which has the same 1 T-slot spacing
Taig offers a top-slide which can be mounted at an angle onto the cross-slide for cutting tapers. It attaches onto the cross-slide by a set of dovetail claws which grab onto a steel dovetail rim mounted on a round island in the underside. These jaws are tightened by means of a tiny hex screw. This flimsy arrangement is a pain to use.

This kit adds one inch to the travel of the lathe cross slide on 7x10 and 7x12 mini lathes. These are SIEG C2 and C3 lathes. This lathe conversion travel kit replaces the saddle and the cross slide feed screw, and it includes a spacer for the longer screw. Each rotation of the hand wheel will advance the table 0.050". The mini mill tool
Using the Taig compound slide as a milling attachment for the Taig lathe. The compound slide for the Taig will do a good job as a milling attachment too. You have to rig up a few things and make a few parts. It's an enjoyable day of doodling. (Of course, if you don't want to doodle, you can just buy the factory Taig milling attachment.)
At TAIG Tools we manufacture precision desktop Milling Machines, Lathes (otherwise known as Micro Mills and Micro Lathes) and a complete line of accessories to tackle any type of task. Whether you are working with steel, aluminum, brass, wood, or plastic our equipment can handle any of these materials. Our machines are small in size but not in construction!

Apr 18, 2014 The other is a Atlas 12 inch commercial lathe compound that was for sale on this forum ( thanks Rick ) at a very reasonable price. The second problem is Atlas made a very short lower slide that offers very little support if for some reason you go past the slide as you most likely will and the tool catches the compound has had so much material

The nominal table size is 4", and the base is 4" across. turn the carriage and cross slide dials. Since the cross slide will not go under the work piece, a HSS bit is ground with it's cutting edge on the right side of the cutter. It's mounted in the tool post as shown in More Taig Lathe & Mill Projects
May 31, 2017 I did this on the Taig lathe as follows: First, clamp the stock Taig toolpost between centers over the cross-slide and crank lock the tailstock to hold the toolpost perfectly centered. See photo. Second, clamp the toolpost to the cross-slide. I used a pair of 1/2 inch square posts, drilled 1/4 inch down the center and mounted on the cross-slide
A n indexing plate by itself seems to have limited use on a lathe. It's fine for anything that can be done with a toolpost mounted cutter like scribing divisions on a dial. But for drilling or milling, you need a rotating tool and, therefore, something like a milling spindle mounted on the cross-slide.

The lathe is fixed to the top of a small wooden table with four #10-24 long bolts. When I first installed the lathe two years ago, I found that I had to prop up the lathe bed to allow more hand room for turning the axles on the cross slide. I did this by inserting a peice of ¾" wooden board between the table and the lathe
I now have a Taig lathe, courtesy of a friend on the Unimat Yahoo group. It is basic, came with a tailstock (which is missing the dead centre). After some reading I took it apart, cleaned and adjusted the carriage, cross slide and tail stock. Next up, a base with motor mount.
Oct 28, 2017 I have used the Taig lathe to build and repair clocks for over 10 years and it works great. It is probably not the best tool for watch work. The single most useful modification I have done to the lathe is to add a 2 HP (questionable) DC treadmill motor

Jul 06, 2010 Did you know Taig makes a milling attachment for under 65.00 Schroll down to it, item 1220 They would require major modification for a accurate and functional fit to the typical Watchmakers Lathe. You would then be able to mount a small vice to the lathe cross slide and away you go. Saddle gives the x axis, cross slide gives the y and

Mar 23, 2018 1) I have a similar adapter for my Taig mini (or micro) lathe:: 1.a) it is difficult to hold things well enough to mill <accurately> 1.b) the milling performance is <best I can say> slow 1.c) it is hard to see what you are milling 1.d) I did mill some slots in 6061 Al for a telescope I built 19 years ago
The T-bolt holes needed to secure the spindle to the cross-slide or milling table are rather long. You will need 2 1/4" 10-32 UNF T-bolts to fix the spindle to the Taig lathe cross-slide or 2 ½" bolts to fix it to the Taig mill table (which has the same 1" T-slot spacing as the lathe, but the slots are deeper.)
